Where are the Registry Files?

The Registry is a database essential to the operation of your computer, improper changes to the registry can cause your computer to malfunction.  Make sure you fully research, understand, and confirm, preferably through the Microsoft Knowledge Base, any changes you plan to make in the Registry. Always have a backup.


Windows Vista:

1 click on the Start Menu icon
2 type 'regedit' into the search box
3 click on 'regedit' in the results display


Windows XP:

1 Go to Start
2 Run
3 type 'regedit' into the Run box
4 click OK, the Registry Editor window will appear providing access (in Windows XP) to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_USERS, and HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG.
