Unassociate File Types

Stuck with a program trying to open a certain file? Here's the handling.

Windows Vista:

1 right-click on the file
2 select  'Open With'
3 choose 'Default Program'
4 select from the display of Recommended Programs
5 optionally select  'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'

Windows XP:

1 right-click on the file
2 select  'Open With'
3 select 'Choose Program'
4 choose the program from the list or browse to the program
5 click OK
6 optionally select 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'
7 click OK to exit

You can also go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Folder Options -> go to the File Types tab, to view Registered File Types and make adjustments.  See also: How to change file associations in Windows XP - Microsoft Knowledge Base
