Repairing Registry Permissions

You may have attempted to correct the registry with a registry repair utility only to receive messages that you do not have the necessary permissions to make changes to certain registry keys, resulting in the utility continually 'finding' the same registry errors over and over again. The problem typically lies with altered permissions in the registry database.

I have found only one solution to this problem, using the SubInACL command line tool from Microsoft. I won't detail the proceedure here since it is neatly presented in numerous locations including: Ramesh Srinivasan's Blog and Aaron Stebner's WebLog. The source of this fix appears to be Ken Zhao of Microsoft who originally notes the fix in Microsoft Newsgroup. Here's the original posting.

Basically the SubInACL tool can be used to set all Registry permissions to their default settings, after the fix, you should be able to run your registry repair utility without further difficulty. I can tell you I have tried it on a Windows XP machine and it solved the problem when nothing else would.
