Tweak Windows

If you've handled unnecessary running processes, spyware, fragmentation, and general clean up, a relatively new system should run like a top - you may not want to tinker too much with the successfully quick and stable. On the other hand tweaking can be fun and rewarding particularly in terms of the knowledge and familiarity one may gain.

Keep in mind that when tweaking your computer you are tinkering with settings that are more or less essential to the proper function of your computer. Tweaks can improve performance but they can also produce unexpected results such as crashes or you simply may not like the effect of the tweak on your computer. If you are unfamiliar with how to undo the tweak a great deal of time may be spent trying to undo it, such as an entire weekend or one-hundred years.

You may most safely attempt tweaks that are a well-documented part of the Windows operating system. For example, Clear Type is a tweak for your fonts - Microsoft technology. On the other hand, a manual Registry change, recommended on a random website or forum, is relatively risky - there is no guarantee of accuracy or that the result stated will likewise be your experience.  It is best to consult source references from Microsoft to confirm tweaks . Tweak UI - tweak everything from balloon tips and mouse function to what appears on your desktop (for example, remove the Recycle Bin from your desktop). Also rebuilds icons - a solution when Windows displays the wrong icons for files, folders or shortcuts, handy when an icon from a theme is 'stuck'

Powerstrip (Free Trial) - utility to optimize video card settings, including video card overclocking. Using the slider clock controls to increase engine and memory clock speed can really add some pep to a sluggish video card.

Clear Type Tuner Power Toy - Greatly improves font clarity.  The Power Toy version released Sept. 2004 creates access to 'Clear Type' through a Control Panel icon. Clear Type is also available from Microsoft as an  on-line version .
