Hijack This

Hijack This is a popular tool for identifying malware - Hijack This creates a log of running processes for help in identifying malware, but the logs FIRST need to be evaluated by those familiar with what to look for. In other words, DON'T just check every process and delete, otherwise you'll delete valid items.

Typically a user runs Hijack This to create the needed log, then posts the log on a forum so that it can be reviewed by knowledgeable volunteers at that forum. Experiences in posting vary, there are instances where the forums are backlogged and so postings sit long unreviewed, it is not unusual for a posting to sit several days before it is reviewed. On the other hand, I've seen postings reviewed very quickly, as noted it really depends on the traffic volume at the forum.

The quality of response also varies, usually the reviewer is more knowledgeable than the average user posting a log, and will in most instances point out some suspect entries in the log, recommend some anti-spyware utilities to use, asking that you then re-post a new log after having run the utilities.
